Maui is a demigod with a larger-than-life personality, known for his shape-shifting abilities and magical fish hook. At that moment, Chief Tui (Temuera Morrison), Moana’s father, enters and reassures the children that they are safe from darkness as long as they stay within the reef. However, in his haste, he accidentally knocks over a post revealing drawings of monsters, causing chaos among the children.
Moana 2 (
Despite Maui refusing to help her and being outnumbered by the Kakamora, Moana was determined to rescue Heihei and retrieve the Heart. She fought and outsmarted the pirates, managing to rescue Heihei where the two managed to escape and jump back onto their boat, with Heihei spitting out the Heart upon hitting the canoe’s mast. After escaping from and defeating the Kakamora, Moana and Heihei continued their journey with Maui reluctantly accompanying them.
Before leaving, Maui bids Moana farewell with a hug, thanking her for all she’s done. She learns that Maui has stolen the heart for a village that he has looked after once he was given his powers from the gods. Through some encouragement from Moana, Maui is given the strength to shape shift with ease, even managing to turn into a hawk.

Te Fiti, an island goddess, created all life and became an island after falling into deep slumber. Te Fiti’s heart, a small pounamu stone, was sought after by the monstrous forces of the sea, until it was stolen by the demigod Maui. Moana Leaving the island without the heart caused it to collapse and a lava monster named Te Kā to appear and confront Maui, which caused his fish hook and the heart to disappear into the ocean. Because of the heart being stolen, the islands Te Fiti created are cursed to lose the life she gave them. Nalo’s sea monsters turn out to be almost too much for the crew and Moni almost dies. Moana is devastated and loses faith in herself, but Maui manages to inspire her.

While Moana distracts Tamatoa, Maui retrieves his hook, only to find himself unable to control his shape-shifting. He is overpowered by Tamatoa, but Moana’s quick thinking allows them to escape with the hook.
