UIU Students Protest Expulsion of 26 Final-Year Students by Blocking a Road in Dhaka
June 21, 2025, Dhaka In order to demand the retraction of expulsion orders against 26 final-year honors students, a group of United International University (UIU) students blocked the main road in the Bhatara Notun Bazar neighborhood of the capital this morning.
About 25 to 30 students took to the streets just after 8:00 AM to start the protest, which essentially stopped traffic from Kuril Bishwa Road heading towards Badda. Some of the typical morning traffic was relieved, though, as traffic in the opposite direction—from Badda to Kuril Bishwa Road—remained unaffected.
Rakibul Hasan, the officer-in-charge of the Bhatara Police Station, confirmed the demonstration in an interview with UNB. He also stated that police are keeping an eye on the situation to avoid any escalation.
According to reports, 26 students were expelled from the university after receiving extremely low scores on their final exams, said OC Rakibul Hasan. “This decision was made because the administration is worried they might not be able to pass in subsequent attempts.”
However, the students contend that the expulsions were unwarranted and that they were made arbitrarily without providing them with a fair chance to contest or defend their academic standing. The demonstrators, brandishing signs and shouting catchphrases, are calling for administrative responsibility from university officials in addition to the prompt reversal of the expulsions.
“This year is our last one. One student who wished to remain anonymous said, “The university is ruining our future instead of helping us.” “We demand that the decision be overturned and that those in charge face consequences.”
Concerns among commuters have been raised by the protest’s disruptions during the busiest morning hours. To avoid the blocked portion of the road, a number of cars were observed reversing or using other routes.
The demonstration was still going on at 11:00 AM, and university representatives had not yet issued a formal statement responding to the students’ demands.
